چکیده

The incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) varies widely according to geographic location and ethnic background. Over the year, numerous studies have shown that the etiology of NPC is multifunctional, including genetic, environmental, and virological factors. Among these factors, EBV seems to be the strong association between infection of EBV and NPC (International Agency for Research on Cancer, 1997). However, given the universality of EBV infection but the unique geographic distribution of NPC, factors other than EBV are also believed to be important determinants of the risk for NPC. Numerous factors have been postulated to be linked to the development of NPC, including consumption of salted and processed foods, occupational exposure to formaldehyde and dusts, and cigarette smoking (Hildesheim and Levine, 1993). Most studies of NPC have been conducted in China or among individuals of Chinese ethnicity. In Thailand, the age-standardized incidence of NPC during the period 2001-2003 was 3.7/100,000 among

Environmental risk factors for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a case-control study in northeastern Thailand.

A case-control study of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was conducted in northeast Thailand, a region which shows an intermediate risk for this neoplasm. The study was conducted to investigate the importance of environmental exposures, particularly salted fish consumption, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and occupational exposure to smoke or dust, as risk factors for the disease. Data from 120 na...

تعیین میزان همراهی ویروس اپشتین-بار با سرطان نازوفارنکس توسط روش واکنش زنجیره‌ ای پلیمراز

Background and purpose: The association of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was firmly established as early as 1973. A clear understanding of its etiology is still lacking, but nasopharyngeal carcinoma is widely suspected to be the result of both a genetic susceptibility and exposure to environmental factors or Epstein-Barr virus infection. NPC is more prevalent in yo...

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, particulary tumors endemic to the Far East, commonly harbors Epstein-Barr virus. The detection of nuclear antigen associated with EBV and viral DNA in NPC cells have revealed that EBV can infect epithelial cells and is associated with transformation. Human papilloma virus is an epitheliotrophic oncogenic virus that has been detected in a variety of head and neck tu...

Analysis of Epstein Barr Virus Encoded RNA Expression in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in North-Eastern India: A Chromogenic in Situ Hybridization Based Study

Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common cancer in the North-East region of India. Though the role of environmental contributors of NPC in the North-Eastern part of India is firmly established, EBV as an etiological agent in the region remains unexplored. Material and Methods: Fifty-one patients, who presented at the department of ENT, NEIGRIHMS and were confirmed as NPC upon h...
